What We Do/Our Training

How can CVE help businesses hire and retain employees?
CVE has a large pool of job seekers available for businesses, all of whom have been trained and coached by CVE’s experienced staff. Contacting one of our employment specialists will enable employers to choose from this pool of qualified applicants. The employment specialist will develop an understanding of the needs of a business environment, and then match the best candidate for the job. Additionally, the employment specialist team is available to support candidates and employers post-hire to ensure that the placement is a success.

How successful are CVE’s placements?
In order to measure the success of its programs, CVE contracted BTW to monitor candidate progress for a two year period following initial service at CVE. The study found that 61% of the individuals studied were employed in the community at the end of the two year period.

How can CVE help businesses take advantage of available tax credits?
Employers that hire CVE job seekers qualify for a variety of tax credits. Tax credits include federal, state, and local incentives. Federal incentives are based on “Welfare to Work” which is up to $20,000 and a “Work Opportunity Tax Credit” which is up to $6000 per employee. State credits include a “State Enterprise Zone Hiring Tax Credit” which is up to $31,605 per employee over a five year period. Finally, the local credit is an “Enterprise Zone Payroll Tax Credit”.

How can you partner with CVE?
• Hire a qualified CVE job seeker
• Consider joining the CVE Board of Directors or Business Advisory Council
• Partner with CVE’s youth program or mono- and bilingual Spanish speaking program
• Share your professional experience with CVE job seekers by conducting mock interviews, resume reviews and talking with them about office culture.

What training do CVE candidates undergo?
CVE candidates have undergone intensive training to help them build communication, organization, and customer service skills. They receive regular feedback regarding their performance in the workplace, and this feedback and training is available to candidates for as long as needed. Additionally, CVE works with employers once CVE candidates are placed to continue this feedback and training process for as long as it is needed.

Clerical Job Training Program
CVE’s clerical training program provides participants with an opportunity to gain hands-on work training in an administrative/clerical role. CVE has contracted with the City and County of San Francisco’s Department of Public Health and this partnership allows program participants to work in a one year paid training position at one of the many CBHS sites throughout San Francisco. This paid training opportunity supplements the extensive classroom training participants receive at CVE, which covers many of the skills needed for responsibilities in today’s offices including customer service and computer skills. This training and experience prepares clients to work in a wide variety of industries that value customer service and skills typically used in an office setting.

Janitorial Job Training Program
CVE established its janitorial training company, IME, in 1989 in order to provide job training participants another viable option to reaching their job goals. IME participants can work for one year in a paid training position at one of our janitorial sites throughout San Francisco. Participants also receive a certificate regarding their training. During this time, participants are trained in the following key areas:

  • General office cleaning
  • Hard floor stripping and waxing
  • Carpet cleaning
  • Interior window cleaning
  • Upholstery cleaning
  • Emergency clean-up
  • One-time deep cleaning
  • Move-in and move-out cleaning services
  • Bio Hazard clean-up

Café Training Program
CVE owns and operates two cafés where clients can learn the fundamentals of customer service and the café industry. This training and experience enables clients to work in a wide variety of industries that value customer service skills and experience working with the public.
Clients start their training at the Lounge Café and, when ready, transfer to our busier location, the Sunrise Café. In addition to traditional café and customer service training, we offer ServSafe food safety certification courses and teach basic food production and preparation techniques.
